Lumpkin County Indians
Program Goals
All of our programs will stress academics, good sportsmanship, being aggressive
on the mat, practice attendance, and a meaningful work ethic.
Lumpkin County wrestling will continue to build a program starting with our youth
wrestlers. The success of our USA team is paramount to the success of our middle
and high school programs. Once we establish a winning tradition at all levels, our
program will continue to reload and not rebuild at the middle and high school levels.
USA Program
This program must be a dependable fun environment that promotes wrestling and its
benefits for young kids. Our coaches will love kids, have patience, and not focus
entirely on winning. Kids will be taught the basic moves and will learn how to deal
with adversity which is very common in our sport. This mentality will be kindergarten
through 5th grade. For the more experienced wrestlers in 5th grade, they will begin
to participate in middle school practice and experience a more intense practice
and learn new moves. Any wrestler that is ready will be encouraged to compete in
the USA Little Kids State Tournament.
Middle School Program
At this level we want to start focusing more on preparing the kids for
competition and wrestling to win. We want every kid to be involved in USA wrestling
and our folk style season will end at big kid’s state in March. Coaches will continue
to stress the basics but begin to integrate slightly more advanced moves. The program
will host the annual Jr. Mountaineer Traditional Tournament.
High School Program
At this level we will continue to stress basic moves can win championships.
We will focus on being aggressive, keeping good body position and constantly moving
in a match. We will teach the kids how to “chain wrestle.” We want the kids to have
a series of moves so if one doesn’t work they will have two more to use. Drills,
at all levels, will be based on good body position, chain wrestling, and constant
movement. The program will host the annual John Smith Mountaineer Traditional Tournament.
BELIEVE! WINNING WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF!
